Wind Turbine Site
How to assess the suitability of your site
Wind Speed A site with an average wind speed of 4-5 meters per second is generally sufficient to make installing a wind turbine worthwhile. To find out the average wind speed in your area use the UK Wind Speed Database which can be access via the British Wind Energy Association website:Click HERE
The data can only be used as a guide and should be followed by on-site measurements for a proper assessment which can be provided by AWE Energy.
Proposed Location Ideally stand alone Wind turbines should be sited as far away as possible from buildings and trees to avoid turbulence. Attention should be given to high obstacles such as trees, buildings and hills which can block the wind and reduce wind speed. The turbine should be tall enough to be above any turbulent air, a guideline is to be above the height of obstructions within 10-20 meters of the tower. Most of the wind in the UK comes from the south-west so it is best to have a clear exposure to the prevailing wind.
Turbines can be sited as close as 20-50 m to your house or up to 500m away. The further away though the bigger the cable required.
For installation purposes an area of land at least equivalent to 2.5 times the height of the mast and a width of the rotor diameter plus 2 m are required. Guyed towers require more space however. Lorry access is also necessary. For servicing the mast will need to be lowered.
