Selling Energy

Selling your Surplus
Any surplus power you may generate can be sold back to your electricity provider.  The rate providers pay varies considerably and it may be worth shopping around.  Some providers will buy both electricity and ROCs in a package.  It is generally not worth selling electricity to the Grid unless you generate a surplus of 2000kWh per annum in order to offset the cost of the meter.

ROC's
Renewable Obligation Certificates or ROC's as they are more commonly known are issues on a mWH basis annually. What you get paid, varies but
But you will probably get between about £32 per ROC and £50+ per ROC.  Bearing in mind 1,000kWh=1mWh=1 ROC
To acquire ROC’s, you need a total generation meter (k Wh meter) @80 - £130Stg.  We use a Siemens ZCE-127 (1-Ph) or ZMD-120 (3-Ph)

LEC’s
The Climate Change Levy was introduced in April 2001 to encourage business users to improve their energy efficiency and switch to renewable sources.
LEC’s – Levy Exemption Certificates – came about as a result of the Levy, and are allocated to generators in proportion to the amount of renewable power they produce.

REGO’s
REGO is a new certification system that will provide a boost for renewable energy generators. The REGO scheme will enable renewable energy producers to show that their electricity comes from a green source. The scheme will be open to all producers of green energy, including the smallest, domestic generators as well as large-scale hydroelectric power generators. It will encourage the development of renewable energy projects by enabling generators to provide their buyers with an assurance of the green-ness of their product.

Exporting
The NHH metering limit has been raised to a maximum installed capacity of 30kW.  This means that up to 2off 15kW turbines can be installed at a location with a NHH meter(non half hourly) which is only a few hundred to buy and has no annual upkeep fee.  Unfortunately if you wish to go over the 30kW then you need to install a HH meter – if you want to get paid for your exported electricity.

Means to an End
1)      DO IT YOURSELF
You can do everything yourself!
Complete the Ofgem accreditation forms and provide electrical schematics and get yourself on the REGO list to entitle you to accumulate ROC’s and LEC’s. TO do so you will also require a sell and buy-back agreement with an electricity supplier. However, this takes a lot of time, effort and is not for the faint hearted as on top of all this you will need to seek a buyer for you ROC’s and LEC’s regularly.
Or
2)      GET A COMPANY TO DO IT.
The easiest option is to get a company to do it. It will mean you will not get the full value of your ROC or LEC but it is a lot less hassle and they guys know the paperwork and the market inside and out.
